The Southeastern Anatolia Region delegation of the Commission of Wise People visited the village of Roboski where 34 people, mostly children, were killed in the bombardment by Turkish warplanes on 28 December 2011.
The delegation, including Yılmaz Ensaroğlu, Emin Ekmen, Prof. Fazıl Hüsnü Erdem, MAZLUMDER President Ahmet Faruk Ünsal, Kezban Hatemi, Etyen Mahçupyan, Murat Belge and Yılmaz Erdoğan, was welcomed by Roboski families carrying the photographs of the children they lost in the massacre.
Lawyer Kezban Hatemi pointed out that the massacre took the lives of children who were struggling to have the future they wanted to live. "The regime in Turkey didn't enable its citizens to live with human dignity because of its failure to ensure justice and rights. This country has long been a place where who committed a crime get away with it. In the currently ongoing peace process light should be shed on the perpetrators of all crimes that have remained unsolved so far. Roboski isn't an incident that could be passed over. We are here to share the pain of the people of this village whose future is buried in its graveyard".
Speaking after, families of the victims stated that there would be no peace in the country unless the government offered an apology for the Roboski massacre. Families also reacted against the escalating village guard policy of the state.
Mercan Encü, mother of Vedat who was killed in the massacre, criticized the government for arming village guards while calling for the disarmament of the Kurdish movement. “We demand the abolishment of the village-guard system and provision of employment opportunities instead. The government should ensure a peace environment instead of imposing the village-guard system so that we all can lead a free life with our Kurdish language, identity and culture”.
Medine Ürek, mother of another victim Salih Ürek, pointed out that they demanded peace as well as justice and, that they would continue to struggle for justice for Roboski.
Zeki Tosun, father of victim Mehmet Tosun, said they supported the peace process with all their heart, but criticized the report released by Parliamentary Uludere Sub-Commission. “Would members of the commission have approved that report if they had lost their child in the massacre?”, he asked and added that they demanded that the Uludere Commission should also involve members of Commission of Wise People.
Following the speeches, the delegation and families visited the graveyard where victims are buried. Speaking here, Muhammed Encü's father Ubeydullah Encü said they stood by Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan who-he underlined- should be freed.
Speaking after, director Yılmaz Erdoğan said that there would be no peace unless the Roboski massacre is addressed in a proper way. “Roboski is a real desperate situation. My brothers fell victim to war but I believe they have also been the heroes of peace”, he added.
