Green Left Party Spokesperson Uçar: Freedom comes with women

The Women's Council of the Green Left Party (YSP) launched the election campaign in Ankara. YSP spokesperson Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar gave a combative speech and said: "The women's struggle is our path and our mission statement is Jin, Jiyan, Azadî!"

The Women's Council of the Green Left Party (YSP) presented its programme for the 14 May elections in Turkey at a launch event in a hotel in Ankara. YSP co-spokesperson Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar gave an opening speech, welcoming those present in her mother tongue, Kirmanckî, before continuing in Turkish. The speech was repeatedly interrupted with the slogans "Jin jiyan azadî" (Woman, Life, Freedom) and "We are not silent, we are not afraid, we do not obey".

The event was attended by politicians from the political parties HDP, SYKP, ESP, KDP-T, EHP, EMEP and DP, as well as members of the Peace Mothers Initiative, the Rosa and Star Women's Associations, the Human Rights Association (IHD), the Trade Union Federation (KESK) and representatives of numerous other women's organisations. Guests of honour included Fehime Poyraz, the mother of Deniz Poyraz, who was murdered by a Turkish fascist at the HDP headquarters in Izmir, and Lisa Çalan, who was seriously injured in the attack on an HDP election rally in Amed (tr. Diyarbakir) on 5 June 2015. The event, which began with a minute's silence in memory of all feminicide victims, was moderated by theatre actress Berfîn Emektar.

YSP spokesperson Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar said in her speech: "We put ourselves at the forefront of the struggle against racism, discrimination, feminicide, hate crimes, exploitation, hunger, profiteering, looting and destruction so that the struggle for rights, freedom, work and social justice wins. We are women who will not give up the dream of a democratic republic and a democratic society. We have been everywhere and are everywhere against those who try to confine us with the crisis of democracy and freedom. We are taking the third path by strengthening our struggle for women's liberation and building a new life together. We meet to make a difference together and grow in solidarity.

We are on the threshold of the second century of the Republic. The world and the country are confronted with a situation that is at least as bad as it was a century ago. Migration, the harsh wheel of exploitation and misogynistic policies of the male-dominated capitalist system, ecological destruction, ongoing wars in all corners of the world and the politics of oppression and persecution in our region are increasing day by day in the process. The government has nothing but oppression and violence to rule, and it is obvious that it will never have anything else. At this threshold, we exist for the democratic and free future of women. The Green Left Party is the address for building a democratic, ecological, free and egalitarian life against male-dominated governments. It is the address of a democratic republic. We invite all women to meet at this address and build a new life.

We women need neither the anti-women People's Alliance nor the restorative male opposition. The third road we have taken has reached another stage with the work of women, and we will triumph with it and democratise this republic. The century we are on the threshold of necessitates a reckoning with the last century and the republic. It is a reckoning on behalf of women, youth, peoples, faiths and the marginalised in this society. Our wish, our hope, our struggle is to build a democratic, participatory and pluralist republic after this reckoning, and the Women's March has already begun. With solidarity here today, we want to complete the democratic republic and together build a century and a republic where women will live more freely.

Dear women, the Green Left Party is the breath, the voice, the word and the new life of the peoples of Turkey, women and youth in these elections. Together we come to overcome the rotten politics based on tyranny, lawlessness, injustice, rejection and denial, war and plunder. We have come to stand up to the palace, the lies, the plunder, the war and the exploitation and to raise the struggle of the peoples and the truth. We have come together here to remove the obstacles to a democratic and peaceful solution to the Kurdish question. We know that the struggle of women also stands for the will for peace and a solution. There is no Kurdish problem in Turkey, but a Kurdish reality. Since 2013, we believe that the will for a solution was never exhausted, that it will become even stronger with the work of women and that a democratic solution can be realised.

We continue to organise and strengthen the struggle against the male-dominated mentality. We are not giving up our system of co-chairs and our principle of equal representation. We say: the Istanbul Convention is ours. We are moving together towards an election where women's solidarity and struggle will win against anti-women alliances. We are almost there, we will send the one-man regime away. We will not allow our women's struggle to be pushed back in any way. As women, we have prepared the Green Left Party for the elections. Together with the HDP Women's Council, we have prepared for the new century with all women. We want to continue to lead this struggle together with the HDP women.

Against the violence of the male state and for the lives of the excluded, we are the party that defends women's freedom and equality. Against the exploitation of our labour, we are the ones who defend the freedom and justice of labour. Against those who ignore women, we are the ones who raise the word that women were, are and will be. We are everywhere with our identities and colours. We are here and we come to hold accountable this predatory and plundering power that robs us of our loved ones and our lives and offers us nothing but death in times of disaster. We have come to demand accountability for the right to life of all women, in this painful process of living in women's solidarity with each other. We promise we are here! We will demand this accountability together and we will change this government together.

We will organise our rebellion against women's poverty and resolutely stand up for justice in the economy to change it. We are ready to lead the struggle for a free, equal and hopeful life and no longer live our lives in fear of earning a living. We know those who plunder our place, our homeland, our land and our nature. Against the policies of capital and government based on profit, plunder and usurpation, we join together as women to hold them accountable for our lives and our future. We are the party of women who continue their glorious march on the third way by saying “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî”. We have a promise: We will take back what is rightfully ours. We are here with the conviction and determination we have in the struggle of women in our country and in the world. We are not without options, freedom comes with women, we are all together in the Green Left Party for a democratic life. We believe, we are determined, we are coming, we are changing. Now is the time for women's freedom. We are here and as women we will make a difference. Women's struggle is our way and our mission statement is “Jin Jiyan Azadî!"
