83-year-old Kurdish activist passes away in Kobanê

Long-time Kurdish activist Osman Hec Elî has died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Kobanê at the age of 83.

Osman Hec Elî died of cerebral hemorrhage in Kobanê on Sunday morning at four o'clock at the age of 83. His funeral is to take place later today in the village of Tirmik, south of the city.

Elî was born in Kobanê in 1940 and was the father of six sons and eight daughters. His son Hogir Kobanê was martyred during the liberation offensive against ISIS in Manbij  in 2016. Elî was a long-time activist of the Kurdish liberation movement and was arrested several times by the Syrian regime. He became acquainted with the PKK in 1979 when Abdullah Öcalan came to Syria and stayed for a while in the area around Kobanê. He attended meetings of the movement in Lebanon and Damascus and has been active continuously for the past three decades. After the revolution of Rojava in July 2012, he worked for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) committees to solve social problems. After the death of his son, he became a member of the Council of Families of Martyrs.
