Civilians worried as M-4 highway reopens

Civilians were attacked on the M-4 highway despite it having been opened under Russian guarantee. Local people using the M-4 say that they are worried.

Russian forces are responsible for the security of the M-4 international highway, which has been closed for approximately 20 days based on uncertain reasons. There have been criticisms that Russia violated the agreement signed on May 23 as Russian military panzers did not ensure the safety of the road users. Russian military forces were supposed to protect civilians using the road against the Turkish state and its gangs. Speaking about the reopening of the road, civilians warned that Russia may again violate the agreement it signed.

Traveling between the Euphrates and Cizire regions, Mustafa Ehmed said, “When Russia does not secure the road to protect civilians, the road comes out of service. We also have to turn to alternative routes. This means that time wasted on the road will build up”. Highlighting their hesitation to use the road when Russian forces are not present, Ehmed added, “Invading gangs continue their existence along the way. Many civilians have lost their lives because of their attacks.”

Civilian Heduş Ehmed El Ravi emphasized that Russian forces should not leave the M-4 highway which is one of the most important roads in the region. He added that the gangs attacked civilians in the absence of Russian forces.
