Manbij Canton Intellectuals Union evaluated the methods and importance of defending the cultural identity of the region in the panel discussing the cultural heritage of Manbij.

The panel was organized within the scope of the series of seminars promoted by the Manbij Intellectuals Union and opened to the people of Manbij. The panel discussed the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the area.

Members of the Manbij Canton Democratic Civil Administration, political party representatives and members of the Manbij Intellectuals Union attended the panel.

Manbij Intellectuals Union co-chair Ehmed El Yûsif said: “Manbij, one of the oldest cities in Syria, was founded in 2000 BC and has 3 districts: Ebû Qelqel, Xefse and Mesken. This city reached its highest levels during the old temple period, traces of which still remain in the public park of Manbij.”

Yûsif continued: “There are many reasons for the importance of preserving cultural heritage. One of them is that it helps preserving cultural identity. The traditions and customs of the city represent its cultural identity.”

Yûsif pointed out that every society has its own unique culture and historical heritage, which are a source of pride for those who live there, and therefore the preservation of culture strengthens people's ties with society and their national identities.

Stating that the aim of the seminar was to strengthen this cultural bond and draw attention to the importance of preserving national identity, Yûsif said: "If it were not for our connection with our history, customs and traditions, we would not be here in this present time."

Yusif concluded his speech by saying that "when we stick to our history and traditions, society remains united and culturally becomes a shield against any invader who want to occupy the region. When society is removed from its history and culture, only its name remains and it will inevitably disappear in time."
