Nurhayat Altun, who was elected as Co-Mayor of Dersim Municipality for the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in 2014 and was imprisoned on 17 November 2016, was released.
Nurhayat Altun was released from Kocaeli F Type Closed Prison No 1 after 7 years and 5 months of imprisonment. The politician was welcomed by members and executives of the Free Women's Movement (TJA), Marmara Association of Assistance and Solidarity with Prisoners and Convicted Families (MATUHAYDER), Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) as well as her relatives.
Nurhayat Altun, who was welcomed with applause and flowers, said: "It is good to be outside, but my heart is with my friends I left in prison. A part of my heart is still inside. Our spirit is always and everywhere free."
Nurhayat Altun then travelled to Ankara with her family and friends.
