MED TUHAD-FED co-chair Elif Haran was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison for alleged "membership in a terrorist organization".
The hearing of Elif Haran, co-chair of the Med Federation of Legal and Solidarity Associations with Prisoner’s Families (MED TUHAD-FED), was held in Amed on Friday. Haran is accused of "being a member of a terrorist organization".
The final hearing of the case in which two separate investigations were merged, was held at Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court. While Haran did not attend the hearing, her lawyer Mehdi Özdemir was present.
The prosecutor, who repeated his opinion on the merits, demanded that Haran be convicted for her activities in the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), the Free Women's Movement (TJA) and the Rosa Women's Association.
In his defense against the opinion on the merits, lawyer Özdemir stated that his client was not an active member of the associations in question. The lawyer denied the allegation of witness Ekrem Demir who claimed that his client "was operating within the organization". Highlighting the fact that the actions that Haran participated in did not constitute a crime, he said the witness statements are unfounded and requested his client's acquittal.
The court sentenced Haran to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges of "membership in a terrorist organization".
