Two guerrillas trying to stop an armoured vehicle with bare hands…

To stop the advance of the armoured vehicles, the two guerrillas shielded their bodies. They used their hands to try to stop the armoured vehicle. Their names were Çekdar Sinan and Orhan Baran.

A picture frame: Two guerrillas are trying to stop an armoured vehicle with bare hands. They shield themselves to prevent bloodshed among Kurds.

That happened five years ago. On March 3, 2017, Shengal was confronted with a new threat while it had been freed from ISIS terrorists for two years.

The "Roj Peshmerga," an armed gang trained by the Turkish state and the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party), was driven over Shengal.

In collaboration with the Turkish authorities, a party claiming to be Kurdish was pointing weapons at their own brothers.

On March 3, 2017, this army planned to enter the Shengal area of Xanesor. As part of this plan, they began digging trenches around Xanesor and Sinune on March 2 in the evening.

The mothers in Shengal reacted to that by filling the ditches with their hands, but they were assaulted.

On March 3, YBŞ (Shengal Resistance Units) met with the ditching party to better grasp the situation and de-escalate tensions. Before the meeting ended, 30 hammers attempted to advance with various armoured vehicles and heavy weaponry. Weapons and armoured vehicles sent by European countries such as Germany to battle ISIS were among those in their possession.

The Shengal forces YBŞ/YJŞ and the Asayish (local security unit) assumed a defensive position to prevent the Roj gangs' advance.

YJA Star (Free Women’s Troops) and HPG (People’s Defense Forces) guerillas in the region offered to mediate in order to avert conflict. To stop the advance of the armoured vehicles, the two guerrillas shielded their bodies. They used their hands to try to stop the armoured vehicle.  Their names were Çekdar Sinan and Orhan Baran.  The vehicle was not slowing down. The Federal Kurdistan Region flag was waving above. There was a huge contradiction.

Both guerrillas were brutally attacked. They were murdered even though they were in the most humane, lawful, and vulnerable situation. Nujiyan Erhan, a journalist who attempted to cover the events, was also exposed to an attack. Two of the journalists who were with them were also hurt. Nujiyan Erhan died on March 22 despite all interventions in the hospital where she was admitted.

The attacks by the KDP and the gang group Roj elicited a strong response. Thousands of people marched through Rojava and Shengal. Rojava's people marched towards Shengal. Roj gangs attacked once more on March 14 when Nazê Nayif, a member of the Yazidi Women's Freedom Movement (TAJE), lost her life.

7 YBŞ fighters were also killed in attacks on Xanesor. From these attacks, only a photograph kept its place in the minds of all: two guerrillas trying to stop an armoured vehicle with bare hands…
