The Press Department of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria released a statement calling for international action against the increasingly ongoing attacks against journalists working in the region.
The appeal followed the killing of journalist Egîd Roj (Şervan Sîdo) in a Turkish drone attack at the Tishrin Dam on Saturday. This is not the first time Turkey has targeted Kurdish media workers in the region. On 19 December 2024, journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin were killed in a deadly drone attack by the Turkish state in the same region.
The statement said:“We in the Press Department of North and East Syria express our condolences to the family of the martyr Egîd Roj, all journalists, media professionals and the people of North and East Syria. We strongly condemn the crimes and attacks by the occupying Turkish state and its mercenaries, which constitute a violation of all international laws and norms that provide for the protection of journalists and media professionals in times of war.”
The statement pointed out that journalists and media professionals in North-East Syria are aware of the reality of these crimes, which will not deter them from performing their tasks, as they are national and humanitarian tasks.
“We renew our appeal to the international bodies concerned with the protection of journalists to break their silence regarding the actions of the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries against journalists and media professionals in North-East Syria”, the Press Department of DAANES concluded.
