DFG: 16 journalists detained, 6 jailed in June

The Dicle Fırat Journalists Association reported increasing pressure on journalists and anti-democratic practices and vowed to continue their fight for the truth.

The Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) released its Report on Human Rights Violations Against Journalists for June 2025.

The report stated that 16 journalists were detained last month, six of whom were remanded in custody. With the latest arrests, the number of journalists behind bars in Turkey rose to 34.

The report described the targeting of Leman magazine over a cartoon, the raid on its office, and the imprisonment of four employees who were “tortured” as examples of systematic attacks on freedom of thought and expression. The DFG condemned the attack as “part of the AKP's policy of repression.”

In June, nine journalists were subjected to investigations and 13 were prosecuted. Mezopotamya Agency (MA) reporter Zeynep Durgut and journalist Alican Uludağ were threatened because of their news reports. Journalist Zilan Gül was sentenced to two years and one month in prison for distributing a newspaper and for the content of the news reports.

The report also highlighted social rights violations such as the non-payment of salaries and meal allowances to 158 KRT employees and the dismissal of 16 journalists.

On the other hand, five media outlets were fined, one TV channel was suspended, one website was shut down, and access to 117 social media posts and three news articles was blocked.

Denouncing the increase in pressure on journalists and anti-democratic practices, the DFG stated: “Attacks on freedom of the press, thought, and expression are increasing every day. While a united struggle against these attacks is essential, we will continue to fight for the truth. By continuing to defend journalism against these anti-democratic practices, we will continue to play a leading role in building a democratic society."
