DFG and MKG have demanded the immediate release of journalists taken into custody early on Monday morning in Istanbul and Izmir.
Ten journalists were detained in home raids carried out in the early morning hours in Istanbul and Izmir.
The journalists taken into custody are: Zeynep Kuray, Bülent Kılıç, Gökhan Kam, Hayri Tunç, AFP correspondent Yasin Akgül, NOW reporter Ali Onur Tosun, BirGün columnist Barış Ince, Sendika.org reporter Zişan Gür, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality photojournalist Kurtuluş Arı, and photojournalist Murat Kocabaş.
The Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) and the Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) condemned the detentions on their social media accounts and called for the immediate release of the journalists.
DFG stated: “Journalists carrying out their professional duties in Istanbul have been subjected to attacks for days. While the Radio and Television Supreme Council threatens channels that broadcast democratic protests, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority has blocked access to numerous X accounts. This morning, ten journalists were detained in raids on their homes. We do not accept the detention of our colleagues and demand their immediate release.”
MKG said: “These attacks, which aim to silence the press and render the truth invisible, are unacceptable!” and added: “Journalists are reporting the news and informing the public. Our detained colleagues must be released immediately. As journalists, we are here, and we are raising our voices. We will not stop writing, speaking, and delivering the truth to the people! We call on all our colleagues and the public to stand in solidarity against these unlawful acts.”
