Swedish Journalists' Union calls for action for Kurdish TVs

Swedish Journalists' Union (SJF) called upon the Swedish and French governments to take a stance against the Turkish state's efforts for the closure of Kurdish television channels.

Swedish Journalists' Union (SJF) Chairman Jonas Nordling released a written statement in which he pointed out the Turkish state's desire to hamper the freedom of press and freedom of expression even beyond its own borders. Nordling noted that the channels Newroz TV, which has already been shut down, as well as Ronahi TV managed their broadcast from Sweden.

Describing this behaviour of Turkey as “worrisome”, Nordling called on Eutelsat to defend the freedom of expression and not to give in to the pressures of Turkey.

SJF Chairman recalled that France is the biggest investor in Eutelsat, saying: "The Swedish Union of Journalists calls upon the French government to defend human rights and to pressurize Eutelsat to reverse the decision given in favour of the shutdown".

The Swedish Union of Journalists c also alled on the Swedish government to handle this issue in talks with the French government and put these pressures against Kurdish TV channels on the agenda of the European Union.
