The people in Hesandin region, who fought against mining activities last year, are now fighting against the construction of a military base.
In the Hesandin Region in the Kulp (Pasur) district of Amed (Diyarbakır), the nature is being plundered to build a road for the construction of a military base.
The local people, who resisted mining activities in the region last year, have now taken to the streets to stop the road construction and destruction of nature, ongoing for 15 days now.
People protested the work together with a delegation consisting of representatives from the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Kulp District Organization, Diyarbakır Bar Association City and Environment Commission, Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) Ecology Commission and members of the Ecology Association.
The group marched to the site where a road is constructed and trees are uprooted, demanding that the construction of the road, planned to reach the Darmori region, be stopped.
As the villagers entered the site where a company from İzmir is carrying out the work, soldiers and village guards stationed on the surrounding high hills also arrived. In an attempt to calm the group, soldiers said that the road was built “not for mineral exploration” but for transportation to the military base planned to be built in the area. Protesting against the construction of a military base in their living space, local people talked with the soldiers and asked the commander of the outpost to stop the work, vowing to take stronger action in the contrary case.
