In the last ten years 1677 prisoners have died in Turkish prisons.

Opposition CHP (Republican's People Party) deputy, Gürkut Acar had asked the minister of justice a specific question on the issue. Minister Sadullah Ergin answered that in the last 10 years the number of prisoners who died in prison was 1677.

In 2012, so far, 52 people have died while in prison.

It is known that there are at least 204 prisoners in need of urgent care.
