171 children died since AKP came to power
In a statement on the occasion of 4 June International Day of Children Victims of Aggression, Human Rights Association (IHD) Diyarbakýr Branch Children’s Commission reported that 171 children lost their life since 2002 when the ruling AKP (Justice and Development Party) came to power in Turkey. The IHD statement underlined that; “The AKP government which recently claims itself to defend the rights of fetus within the scope of debates on abortion doesn’t make mention of the children most of whom have been intentionally or accidentally killed by security powers in our region.”
The statement reminded of articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and noted that; “The consequences of conflicts have a remarkable effect on children as well. The evidences of war constitute a black mark for those who understand the negative effects on children but do nothing to prevent clashes and their reasons.
Underlining that children constitute the largest part of the people affected by the war in the region, IHD reminded of the Roboski massacre where most of the 34 victims were children. “In consideration of the figures by our association, 33 children fell a victim to the conflict environment in the region in 2011. On the other hand, 552 children were killed in the last 24 years, since 1988 when the conflict process started and continued in the densest way.”
Calling attention to the terrifying picture of figures, IHD underlined that none of the perpetrators of these murdered children have been taken to court or imposed a sentence until today owing to their protection by the state.
“We human rights defenders ask for an environment and world where children wouldn’t play in the shadow of weapons. We ask for a bright, equal and brotherly future for our children.”, added the statement.
