2010 was yet another black year as far as women killing was concerned in Turkey. According to the figures, 16 women were mercilessly murdered mostly by people close to them, namely husbands, fathers, boyfriends or brothers. This number does not include women who were forced to commit suicide because of the pressure exercised upon them by men and society, nor does include women who had been raped or harassed.
The violence against women has increased four hundred times in the last 7 years in Turkey, according to the researches.
Sixty percent of those women who were eventually murdered had go to the police or Public Prosecutors for help, but they never got it.
Most of murderers were close to the victims and many killed for the so-called ‘honor or tradition’.
