37 children in Diyarbakir prison are put in isolation after protest

37 children imprisoned in Diyarbakýr E Type Jail with charges of ‘throwing stones’, were given 3 days cell sentence and prohibition from open-air and social activities.

Following the decision of the prison authorities not to give the children' ill friend any medical treatment, the young detainees started a rebellion on 4 May. Beds were set on fire to protest against prison conditions. The children received disciplinary punishments.

“Justice Initiative for Children” Diyarbakýr Branch Speaker Lawyer Arif Akkaya told ANF that “The children will be kept 3 weeks away from sport, 3 days from fresh air and will be held 3 days in isolation. Besides, the management opened investigation against the children under the charges of harming public property.”

Akkaya also expressed the anxiety of “Justice Initiative for Children” activists. He also added that the children are so pshycologically depressed after giving statements that they may even attempt suicide. Akkaya underlined that the management will be responsible for any consequence and uneasiness the children may have as a result of isolation.
