83-year-old Mehmet Emin Özkan remains in prison

Problems were posed to the Forensic Medicine Institute in order to stop the release of 83-year-old Mehmet Emin Özkan, who has been imprisoned for decades as a result of an unfair trial and is seriously ill.

Mehmet Emin Özkan, 83, is being held in Diyarbakır D Type Closed Prison. He has been hospitalized several times in recent months due to the deterioration of his health condition. Traveling to and from the hospital, in handcuffs all the time, turned into torture.

Özkan was last referred to the Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK) in Istanbul on 27 June.

The ATK demanded that Özkan be transferred to the R Type Prison and kept under observation for a month.

Before being taken to the ATK, Özkan was taken to Diyarbakır Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital seven times within a month.

Özkan had previously been given an 87 percent disability and a report stating that he "could not stay in prison", but the Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital Health Board insisted that he "stay in prison" and recommended psychiatrist treatment.
