Following a march from Halfeti to Amara, a celebration was held at the house where Abdullah Ocalan was born.
The festival, organized by the Democratic Institutions Platform in Urfa's (Riha) Halfeti (Xelfetî) district for the past two days to celebrate Abdullah Öcalan's 76th birthday, continued in Amara. After a march led by women to Amara, a celebration for 4 April was held in the garden of Öcalan’s birthplace.
In a clear reference to Öcalan’s age, 76 people attended the celebration, including Democratic Regions Party (DBP) co-chairs Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar and Keskin Bayındır, Öcalan’s brother Mehmet Öcalan, MPs from the DEM Party, municipal co-mayors, members of the Peace Mothers Assembly, some of the young people who marched from Amed (Diyarbakır) to Amara, journalist Haydar Ergül, and Peace Group Member Avesta Gülten Uçar.
The delegation was welcomed in the village of Amara with slogans such as "Bijî Serok Apo" (Long Live Leader Apo), "Rojbûna te pîroz be ey Serok Apo" (Happy Birthday, Leader Apo), "Don’t search for Apocu in the mountains, they are everywhere," and "PKK is just, the people are here."
Young people carried a enlargement of the photograph of Öcalan taken on 27 February in Imrali. Mehmet Öcalan, DEM Party MP Ömer Öcalan, and local residents welcomed the delegation at the house, where Öcalan's photograph was hung on the wall.
Mehmet Öcalan said: "Thank you for the celebrations. This house has witnessed many historic moments. The Kurdish issue must be resolved through democratic means. In our last meeting, Öcalan sent his greetings to everyone. May his birthday be a happy occasion for all. For 76 years, he has been in struggle. He is our sun during the day, our moon at night, lighting our path. We will continue this struggle without giving room to provocations."
The speech was met with chants from the youth: "Rojbûna te pîroz be ey Serok Apo!" (Happy Birthday)
Panel on the history of resurrection
A panel titled "The History of Resurrection," focusing on the Kurdish freedom struggle, was held with journalist Haydar Ergül, who spent 50 days with Öcalan during the international conspiracy process, and Peace Group member Avesta Gülten Uçar as speakers.
Avesta Gülten Uçar emphasized Önder Apo's struggle, saying: "This journey did not start today. It began many years ago. We salute the Call for Peace and Democratic Society. The democratic society will be built with the leadership of youth and women. We will build this together. Contributing to this process is an honor. Today, 76 years ago, we were all born. This is the birth of all peoples. Happy birthday to all of us."*
Then, journalist Haydar Ergül said: "Every society has some influential figures. They say that every hundred years such a figure appears. But for the Kurds, this is different. They have been subjected to attacks for thousands of years. 4 April is a meaningful day. 76 years ago, on this day, thousands of Kurdish children were born, but one became a Leader. Becoming a leader is not easy. Founding a party in Kurdistan, engaging in struggle, is not easy."
Describing the birth and growth processes of the Kurdish freedom struggle, Ergül also shared memories of his time with Öcalan in Rome during the period of the international conspiracy. He continued by recounting key moments from Öcalan’s life of struggle.
The panel concluded with a Q&A session.
