Children in Urfa prison still on hunger strike

Eight child prisoners are still on hunger strike in Urfa’s E-Type Prison. The children started their hunger strike last Tuesday and they are demanding to be transferred to the political prisoners’ wing from the non-political prisoners’ wing where they are currently held.

The children’s lawyer Bekir Benek who met them, has said that the children also have other demands. "My clients ask for all kind of oppressions of prison administration on child prisoners to be ended - he said - they are for their belonging to be handed back to them, including their watches; they asked to be allowed a television and not to be handcuffed during transfers to courts for hearings".

It is expected that a delegation from the Human Rights Association (ÝHD) and Bar Association’s Urfa Branches will visit the prison to investigate the children’s allegations.

According to the Urfa Governor’s press release, the children are currently on trial for “being members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)” and they wanted to stay with other adult prisoners who are also on trial for “being PKK members.”
