DEM Party issues urgent call to stand by Yazidi community

The DEM Party Central Executive Board said that the Yazidis "are facing a grave threat of massacre organized by the KDP" and called on the international community to take urgent action.

The DEM Party Central Executive Board issued a written statement about the threat faced by the Yazidi community.

The statement said: "The ancient Yazidi people, an ethno-faith group that has been subjected to massacres 73 times throughout history, are once again facing a grave threat of massacre organized by the KDP. These ancient people are once again being exposed to the risk of being destroyed by false perceptions and dangerous rhetoric."

The DEM Party said the new threat initiated by the Barzani administration "provides the ground for systematic ethnic and religious cleansing," and stated that nearly 150 thousand Yazidis who survived the genocidal attacks of ISIS mercenaries on 3 August 2014 "are living in inhumane conditions and trapped in tent cities" in the Kurdistan Federal Region.

Pointing out that the Hewlêr (Erbil) administration forced the Yazidis to flee abroad by imposing harsh conditions, the DEM Party said: "During this process, more than 100 thousand Yazidis have been forced to seek refuge in Western countries. The rest have recently been made the target of a new massacre edict with the fatwas issued in mosques in Zakho. Thousands of Yazidis staying in camps under the control of the KDP are desperately trying to return to Shengal due to threats."

The DEM Party warned that the increasing threats of operations against Shengal have "opened the door to a new massacre," and issued the following call: "The KDP, which abandoned the Yazidi people to their fate in 2014 and prevented their defense during the massacres of ISIS, will be the main responsible for a new massacre that will occur.

We warn the KDP and the Kurdistan Regional Government to stop this dangerous game immediately. The Kurdish people will defend the right of the Yazidis to live in peace and security on their own lands, just as they did in the past.

We also call on the international community. Those who turn a blind eye to the massacres of the Yazidi people by ISIS will be complicit in this crime if they turn a blind eye to a new genocide. Crocodile tears do not cleanse consciences.

We especially call on our people to be sensitive to these threats. Our party will continue to resolutely defend the Yazidi people's right to life, their right to live freely on their own lands and to govern themselves. Let's not remain silent against this oppression. Let's raise our voices together and say stop to this crime against humanity."
