Five prisoners on hunger strike in serious conditions

Five prisoners in the Osmaniye T Type Closed Prison, who have been on indefinite hunger strike for 37 days are said to have reached a life-threatening point. The families of the prisoners who have applied to the Human Rights Association (ÝHD) Mersin branch say that prisoners are physically attacked. The families also say that the Ministry of Justice and the prison administration will be responsible for possible deaths.

Thirty prisoners have gone on a hunger strike to protest the antidemocratic and inhuman treatment in Osmaniye Prison 37 days ago. Investigators from the Ministry of Justice as well as deputies from the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and the People’s Republican Party (CHP) had visited the prison. However, their reports brought about no changes in the prison administration. “The prison officers threatened the prisoners after the investigations and told them that the torture will continue. Our children who have been on hunger strike since 37 days say that some prisoners might die unless the prison manager is dismissed. Apparently the prison manager has set up a team to attack prisoners weakened by the hunger strike,” tells a mother of a prisoner on hunger strike, Hazal Abo.

Prisoner Mustafa Ýlgen’s wife Ümit Ýlgen says her spouse is unable to stand up and that he is being kicked by the prison manager’s ‘team’ to stand up to give census. Ýlgen notes families of prisoners have filed several criminal complaints against the manager and yet no legal proceedings have been carried out.
