Kavala: ECtHR decision will 'give strength' to the judiciary in Turkey

The imprisoned businessperson commented on the ECtHR Grand Chamber decision that Turkey violated a binding ruling by not releasing him.

Imprisoned businessperson and rights defender Osman Kavala said that yesterday's (July 11) European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Grand Chamber decision confirmed that his incarceration was politically motivated.

The Grand Chamber ruled that by not releasing Kavala in accordance with a 2019 decision of the European court, Turkey violated article 46/1 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) about the binding force of the ECtHR decisions.

The verdict "clearly revealed that the unlawful practices and political influences on the judiciary still continue and the laws are used in an arbitrary fashion for political motives," Kavala said in a written statement today.

"I believe that this decision will give strength to those members of the Turkish judiciary who continue to act in accordance with the rule of law despite political pressures," he said.
