Kevana Zêrîn: 8 March is a day of freedom and resistance

Kevana Zêrîn Women’s Cultural Movement celebrated International Working Women’s Day, vowing to build a democratic society through culture and art.

The Kevana Zêrîn Women’s Cultural Movement issued a written statement regarding International Working Women’s Day.

The statement emphasized that 8 March is a day when women unite in collective struggle and take steps toward freedom. The statement said: "Spring is the season of life itself; in its deepest essence, it is the season of the birth of culture and art. Life exists through sociality, and at its core, humanity has developed the most profound culture and art. The shared culture of societies has evolved by merging beauty and art. Throughout history, life, society, culture, and art have nourished one another, flourishing and finding meaning, especially in spring. At the same time, the male-dominated mindset has always sought to silence women’s voices, suppress their demands for equality, their pursuit of justice, and their organized resistance. It has tried to stifle the voices of women. On 8 March 1857, this oppressive mentality reached its peak, manifesting in exploitation and brutality."

The statement added: "The burning of women’s bodies has left an indelible mark of deep pain in women's collective memory. However, it has also become the beginning of their strongest, most solidarity-full, and most meaningful struggle. 8 March has become a day when women unite, fight together, and take steps toward freedom. This year, the significance of March 8 has deepened even further with Mr. Öcalan’s call for peace and a democratic society, as he is the most devoted comrade of women. This call beautifully expresses the common dream of a free and just life for all societies. For women, the greatest needs are peace, social solidarity, and democracy, because a dignified and free life can only be built through peace. This call for peace must be embraced, internalized, and strengthened, especially by women. Life, society, and peace are only possible with the presence of women, and this truth has been preserved throughout the cultural history of ancient societies."

The statement continued: "On these historic and meaningful days, Kevana Zêrîn will continue its struggle for freedom on the foundations of culture and art. We remember 8 March with the legacy of women’s resistance and salute their struggle. With the strength we draw from Mr. Öcalan’s call, we will transform March 8 into a celebration of freedom, peace, and hope in the pursuit of building the culture and art of a democratic society."
