Kurdish prisoner on hunger strike in Iran critical

According to the Rahana internet site, the Kurdish human rights activist, Mohieddin Azadi, who suffers from a range of digestive conditions, started his hunger strike to protest the denial of medical help and the authorities’ refusal to move him to a medical facility.

According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Organization, Azadi is said to be in critical condition. The intelligence agents moved the rights activist to solitary confinement, as soon as he announced his intention to go on hunger strike.

Azadi suffers from a range of ailments as a result of his detention conditions and the pressures he has endured. He has repeatedly asked to be moved to a medical facility outside of prison, but the authorities continue to ignore his requests.

Mohieddin Azadi was arrested in March 2008, and taken to the Intelligence Ministry’s detention center in Sanandaj. After being captive for a year in different prisons in Sanandaj and Saghez, he was charged with having ties to foreign elements. Recently a military court in Sanandaj sentenced Azadi to 4 years in prison.
