Following the disclosure of allegations on sexual abuse against jailed children in Pozantý M Type Juvenile Prison, BDP Mersin MP Ertuðrul Kürkçü visited the prison and met the chief public prosecutor to discuss about the matter.
Making a statement to press members after the meeting, Kürkçü called attention to similar allegations of rights violations received from Osmaniye Prison as well. Kürkçü said the followings; “I see no difference between the abuse against children and that imposed on women. I asked all my questions, however some of the answers given to me didn’t satisfy me at all. Following the meeting with the chief public prosecutor, we will also meet the jailed children as we don’t intend to stop following this issue or launching investigations into it.”
While Kürkçü went to Osmaniye Prison after the statement in connection with the allegations of rights violations, another press statement on the subject was made by constituents of Mersin Labor and Democracy Platform in front of Pozantý Prison. The press statement was read by IHD (Human Rights Association) Mersin Chair Ali Tanrýverdi who said the followings; “We see that mainly children are affected negatively from abuses of rights that have been emerging as a result of increasing anti-democratic practices. We call on those who give way to violations of right, the AKP government in particular, to stop obscuring the future of the children who should appear in classrooms, not in prisons.”
The statement ended saying that; “We want it to be known that we will continue to defend the rights of children who will be our future and to bring whoever is responsible to account.”
