The eightieth session of the Committee Against Torture of the United Nations is being held in Geneva until 26 July. During its 80th session, the Committee examined the reports of Ecuador, the Republic of Korea, Ivory Coast and Turkey.
During the sessions on 16, 17 and 18 July, crimes and violations involving Turkey in the occupied Syrian regions will also be discussed.
A report on these sessions was also presented by the NGO Maloca Internationale which draws attention to Turkey's war policy and attacks in Northern Syria.
The report by Maloca Internationale which defends and promotes human rights and the environment, indicates that the main reason for Turkey's involvement in the war in Syria was to reduce Kurdish influence in the regions near its borders. In these operations, regions under Kurdish control were targeted. “These operations led to significant displacements of the Kurdish population, the destruction of infrastructure and the loss of numerous civilian lives.”
Stressing that there are reliable reports of war crimes committed in these regions, the NGO continued: "There are reliable reports of war crimes such as extrajudicial executions, torture and kidnappings of Kurdish civilians committed by Syrian rebel groups supported by Turkey. These groups, supported and sometimes directly coordinated by Turkish forces, have created an environment of fear and insecurity for the Kurds in these regions. The humanitarian consequences of Turkey's actions in Syria have been serious. Thousands of Kurds have been forced to flee their homes, sparking a refugee crisis. Camps for displaced people are often overcrowded and under-resourced. This further increases the suffering of those people who have already experienced serious trauma."
The NGO added: "The Kurdish people continue to face significant challenges and human rights violations in Turkey and as a result of Turkey's actions in Syria. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort by the international community to ensure accountability, provide humanitarian assistance, and promote a peaceful solution to the long-standing Kurdish question. Turkish military operations in Syria have led to the forced displacement of Kurds. This can be considered a form of refoulement, where individuals are forcibly returned to areas where they risk torture or ill-treatment."
