Med Federation of Associations of Solidarity with Families' Prisoners (MED TUHAD-FED) issued a new statement regarding the exclusion of political prisoners from the new measures to be passed in Parliament and the fact that no precautions have been taken in prisons to counter the coronavirus (Covid-19) emergency. The statement stressed that prisons are major risk areas.
Stating that the Ministry of Justice is discriminating against certain groups of prisoners in the third judicial package when it comes to sentence reduction, MED TUHAD FED said: "The package excludes political prisoners. Together with ÖHD we shared before with the public the findings of our visits to Amed prison and other 30 jails in the country. No improvement in solving the issues we have exposed has been recorded and in fact other problems were added."
The statement underlined the following points:
"* In Diyarbakır D-type Closed Prison, the food given to prisoners, is not delivered with the appropriate hygienic measures and comes in limited quantities (it does not contain the necessary vitamins and protein). It was conveyed to us that the prices of the products sold in the canteen were doubled.
* In Seydişehir T-Type Prison, sufficient precautions are not taken against coronavirus, and no cleaning materials are given to prisoners.
* Necessary health measures are not taken in Şakran Closed Prison, and even soaps are not given to prisoners.
* Mustafa Geylani, who is in Elazığ High Security Prison No. 2, is kept in a single cell in Gümüşhane E Type Closed Prison where he was taken to attend a hearing and no cleaning materials are given to him.
* In Bayburt M Type Closed Prison, prisoners are complaining of cough and burning in the throat. Tests are not performed, some of the execution institution officers do not wear masks, gloves, and the money sent by families is put late in their accounts, so they cannot shop in the canteen. Products sold in the canteen are sold at very exorbitant prices.
* As reflected in the press, there has been a fire in Batman M Type Closed Prison to protest the discrimination of the new third judicial package .
* We call on the relevant institutions of the state, especially the Ministry of Justice, to take urgent measures and solve problems in prisons. Once again, we call on all democratic people, including our families, whose children are in prisons, to be sensitive and to raise their voices in order to implement the law of execution equally and fairly."
