No news from Urfa prison since the fire

Neither the government nor the administration of Urfa Prison has taken any steps to improve conditions in the prison since the deadly fire which claimed the life of 13 people on 16 June. Speaking to ANF about the incident and the process after it, Human Rights Association (IHD) Urfa branch chair Cemal Babaoðlu remarked that the poor conditions in the prison remain the same and the administration denies permission for meetings with prisoners.

The statements by AKP ministers and prison administrators have turned out to be lie as authorities have tried to cover up their offense by putting the blame on prisoners with various statements which claimed that the fire broke out as a result of a debate among prisoners, underlined Babaoðlu and noted that the current situation in Urfa Prison isn’t known exactly as prisoners aren’t allowed to meet their families despite all applications they made through IHD.

Babaoðlu also pointed out that the prison administration has still made no explanations about the reason of one hour late intervention in the fire.

The government, besides the fact that it hasn’t taken any positive step after the slaughter, is trying to cover up the incident by preventing public opinion from learning the truths, underlined Babaoðlu who also called attention to the appointment of the prison administrator to his hometown and evaluated this development as an award for the administrator. Babaoðlu also added that families of victims of the deadly fire are preparing to bring an action against those responsible.

Also speaking on the subject,TUHAD-FED President Zübeyde Teker pointed to transfers from the prison and said that “Those people weren’t transferred in an usual way as they were unknowingly forced to leave their wards at a midnight and not asked for their consent for the transfer.”

Teker remarked that the transferred political and ordinary prisoners were subjected to violence during the displacement, and pointed out that the over-capacity problem in the prison cannot be resolved through this kind of forced transfers.
