Open libraries instead of jails, say IHD association

Prison Commission President of the Bar, Lawyer Hesin Dursun reacted to Chief Public Prosecutor of Regional Courts of Justice, Mustafa Alper, who stated that three new prisons will be opened in Van. Lawyer Dursun said; “Open 10 new libraries instead of 10 prisons”.

Remarking that it is challenging to have 10 prisons in a city which doesn’t have 10 libraries, Lawyer Hesin Dursun pointed out that it is not a success to build new prisons. Dursun asked; “Are these prisons a preparation for the arrest of thousand 500 people whom the media said would be arrested?”.

Dursun added that expectations from the legal order at judicial year’s opening are for democratization and against ill treatment. “We expect statements about how the law can function better or how the problems in prisons can be resolved. However, the statement comes about three new prisons in Van which doesn’t have 10 factories or 10 libraries in total. Why are these prisons being built? If it is seen as the solution of the Kurdish problem, this is not a solution.” added Dursun.

Human Rights Association (IHD) Van Branch Secretary Sami Görendað also commented this news as concerning and underlined that the AKP should build new living areas, not prisons. Görendað said; “The intention here is to criminalize the people of Van and to arrest each potential criminal and put them into these prisons. This is neither the solution to the Kurdish problem nor the expectation of our people”.
