Çakmak suffered from stomach cancer and was not released from prison despite appearing unfit for detention. In 2020, he suffered a fainting spell in the D-type prison Diyarbakir and had to be hospitalized. At that time, he weighed only 35 kilograms. The sentence was only suspended last year.
According to MED TUHAD-FED, Çakmak served 11 years in prison. His release came a year before the end of his sentence. "Although he was suffering from serious illnesses and an expert opinion on his being unfit for imprisonment was available, the prison sentence was only suspended in the final stages of his illness.
