Sit-in in Geneva protests evacuation attempt of Lavrio refugee camp

The sit-in held in front of the UN Office demanding freedom for Abdullah Öcalan called on everyone to attend the central march to be held in Lausanne on 22 July.

The sit-in held in front of the UN Office demanding freedom for Abdullah Öcalan protested the evacuation attempt of Lavrio refugee camp and called on everyone to attend the central march to be held in Lausanne on 22 July.

Every Wednesday since 21 January 2021, a sit-in is held in Geneva to demand freedom for Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan. The action is part of the “Dem dema azadiyê” campaign.

Delivering a speech at the action this week, Geneva Democratic Kurdish Community Center (CDK) co-chair Mehmet Latif Çelebi underlined that the anniversary of the Lausanne Treaty, which is the basis of 100 years of Kurdish denial, is approaching. Çelebi said that the Treaty of Lausanne and the absolute isolation imposed on Abdullah Öcalan are two faces of the same coin, because isolation is a continuation of the massacres against the Kurdish people.

Çelebi added that the pressure of the European states against Kurdish politicians should also be addressed, keeping this in mind.

The European states, the architects of the international conspiracy, the United Nations, the Council of Europe as well as the silence of the CPT (Committee for the Prevention of Torture), are, together with the raid and evacuation attempt made against the Lavrio Camp in Greece on Wednesday, part of the legacy of the Lausanne Treaty.

Çelebi called for participation in the central march to be held in Lausanne on 22 July.

According to reports, hundreds of police raided the Lavrio refugee camp at 4 am local time on Wednesday.

Around 40 people staying in the camp were detained and transferred to another camp. Police broke the doors of the rooms during the raid, which was protested by Greek civil society organizations.
