Ten steps back

Ten steps back

Daily Hürriyet reported that the new bill on abortion includes sentence to one to three years in prison should a woman undergo what it calls "undergo medically unnecessary abortions after 10 weeks of pregnancy". If the leak prove to be true and such a clause is actually approved it would mark a ten steps back. Women and their rights are constantly under attack, in a sort of pavlov reflex: when 'manly'-governed things go wrong (economy, employment, politics etc) men turned their anger, hate and violence to women. Uncapable of accepting that women make decision for themselves over their lives, men (proving once more how vulnerable and weak they are) try to prevent women's right to decide with violence.

Abortion is one of the 'hits' when it comes to men trying to impose their supremacy on women.

Health Minister Recep Akdað already has apparently already made a presentation to the Cabinet about the planned bill, despite the protest against such a proposal and especially against the view on abortion so clearly expressed by the Prime Minister.

According to Hürriyet "the proposal gives doctors and healthcare personnel the right to refuse to perform abortions. Doctors will also be obliged to provide lectures and services to convince the parents not to abort".

Also, the paper states, will the medical reasons for abortions be altered. While no change to the time limitation was included, the punishment for violation is set to increase.

The draft, according to the paper "calls for the replacement of family planning regulations with reproductive health services, as well as increasing the budget provided for painless birthing methods. Parental leave and breast-feeding assistance will also expand".

Another change proposed, says the paper "will replace the consent of a parent or guardian with a judicial ruling as a requirement to abort fetuses resulting from incest. The abuser will be sentenced to six to 15 years".

It might as well turn out that these proposals are not true or will not pass. But this is not the point. The point is that women cannot lower their guard. Never.
