A mother and her three children were found shot dead in a house in the southeastern province of Gaziantep early on Thursday, the Anatolia news agency has reported.
Gül Aksoy (34), her twins Melike and Kader, and her 14-year-old daughter Melisa were found dead in their house, located in the Konak neighborhood. The victims were shot in the head.
Police found the bodies of the four in the house after neighbors alerted police upon hearing gunshots. An unlicensed gun was also found in the house.
An investigation into the incident has been opened and father Adem Aksoy detained on suspected links to the killings.
The bodies of Gül Aksoy and her three children were taken to the Gaziantep Avukat Cengiz Gökçek State Hospital for an autopsy.
On Wednesday Human Rights Watch had released a new report showing how Turkey's flawed family violence protection system leaves women and girls across the country unprotected against domestic abuse. Life-saving protections, including court-issued protection orders and emergency shelters, are not available for many abuse victims because of gaps in the law and enforcement failures.
