Women respond to PM statements on abortion

Since the AKP (Justice and Development Party) came to power, violence against women has recorded an increase by 400 percent between the years of 2002-2009. In each period, AKP member mayors and professors have made evaluations on women’s dressing and statements commenting sexual abuse against women rightful. The Prime Minister who got reactions for advising women to bring at least three children into the world has most recently drawn reactions for his statements in which he has expressed his opinions against abortion and cesarean delivery. “Each abortion is equal to an Uludere massacre”, said Erdoðan, generating new discussions throughout the country.

With the new discussions on abortion and caesarean delivery, strong reactions have been displayed by women who called on the Prime Minister to answer for the Roboski massacre instead of standing guard for women’s womb.

Sociologist Halide Türkoðlu remarked that Prime Minister’s statements arise from the feelings of nationalism and the mentality that considers women as an instrument of reproduction. Türkoðlu pointed out that women who have an abortion are identified with murderers and underlined that it is not the Prime Minister or a religious official’s decision to make about women’s freewill to have an abortion.

Diyarbakýr Municipality Council member Þeyda Arslantaþ evaluated Prime Minister’s statements as a reflection of the plans by the dominant dictatorial mentality in Turkey. Arslantaþ remarked that these tragicomic statements in connection with Uludere massacre revealed the mentality of the government which has taken no steps to uncover the slaughter of thirty four people.

Speaking after, Diyarbakýr Municipality Council member Semra Azizoðlu said that “We condemn the Prime Minister should stop standing guard for women’s womb and answer for the massacre. Women will be displaying their reaction against these unfortunate statement and intention.”

Þýrnak Silopi Municipality Council member Jiyan Demir evaluated the identification of abortion with a massacre as unacceptable and remarked that Erdoðan’s statement was an expression of his disrespect to women.
