Women in Turkey like all over the world will demonstrate today for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women throughout Turkey. Panels, workshops, demonstrations, marches and meetings were held in Mersin, Batman, Mardin and their districts.
In particular, a series of panels drew great attention to the condition of women in Akdeniz Municipality in Mersin. Sociologists, psychologists, performers, scientifist and many others addressed the women attendees about violence in society and its impact on women.
The most important conclusion of the panels was the need for women to assert their independence as equal human beings. In addition, panelists argued that the government must be a cooperative partner in promoting women’s rights.
Furthermore, Democratic and Free Women Movement (DÖKH) organized a seminar in Batman while Peace and Democracy Party’s (BDP) Nusaybin and Derik Branches in Mardin held many other activities.
Finally, Prof. Dr. Nükhet Sirman spoke to DIHA about the significance of November 25: “The state has to quit discriminating between their citizens. As far as I’m concerned, according to the state, men are its main citizens and women are for men to posses. This approach has to be abandoned so that violence against women should be considered as a serious crime.”
