Women to march against domestic violence in Istanbul

Hundreds of women are murdered by their families each year in the name of family "honor." It's difficult to get precise numbers on the phenomenon of so-called “honor killing”; the murders frequently go unreported, the perpetrators unpunished, and the concept of family honor justifies the act in the eyes of some societies.

According to research, five women every day in Turkey are victims of this violence. Now, women gathered to march on July 24 in Ýstanbul to protest female homicides and violation in the name of honor.

“We are calling the government to account” will be the common slogan during the march that the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Deputy Sebahat Tuncel is expected to attend as well as many women writers, intellectuals, academicians and journalists.

New Democrat Women Member Rahime Kavrar spoke to DIHA News Agency about the march; “We are going to carry many pictures of women who were killed mostly by their closest ones because of “honor” issue. We are calling on all society to support us to finish this brutality against women.

Ýmece Women Trade Union Initiative Member Serpil Kemalbayda; “The current laws are not capable to solve this problem. A woman has a right to ask protection but no attempt to protect her. We need a developed society from the bottom to the up regarding this case. Prime Minister suggested women to have three children and changed the Ministry of Women into Ministry of Family which showed us that we cannot solve the problem with this mentality. Now, is the time for women’s action for their and sisters’ lives.”
