Zero measure in prisons: No hygiene, no mask, no quarantine

The prisoners in Kürkçüler, Tarsus and Antalya jails said that no measures have been taken in the context of the fight against coronavirus in prisons.

Prisoners in many jails conveyed a very worrying situation during talks with their families.

Mazhar Güler who is in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Closed Prison, Hadi Elçiçek in T Type Closed Prison No. 2 in Tarsus and Serhat Tuncer in Antalya L Type Closed Prison had their weekly phone calls with their families.

Mazhar Güler, who has Hepatitis B and lung diseases and is in Kürkçüler F-Type Closed Prison, spoke about the lack of measures to counter the Covid-19 outbreak.

Güler said: "Personal cleaning materials are not provided. Hot and cold water does not flow regularly. No disinfection was performed in our wards to prevent the coronavirus outbreak. Not enough gloves and masks are provided. Staff in the dining rooms do not wear gloves and masks. Food is unhealthy and given is small quantity."

Hadi Elçiçek, who suffer from a heart condition and he is staying at Tarsus No. 2 T Type Closed Prison, said that they were allowed air time every two days and that they were not given personal cleaning materials.

Noting that the guards did not comply with the hygiene rules, Elçiçek added that hot and cold water did not flow regularly.

Elçiçek added: "There is no measure taken to counter the coronavirus outbreak. There are rumors that a case of coronavirus was found in a female guard. There is no quarantine in prison."

Serhat Tuncer, who is in Antalya L Type Closed Prison, said that he had diabetes, blood pressure and heart diseases, and that there were prisoners with chronic diseases like himself in the ward he stayed.

"Personal cleaning materials are not provided. We are having problems going to the hospital. We are not allowed air time," Tuncer said.
