The Turkish army continues to attack areas in South Kurdistan with fighter jets, helicopters and chemical weapons. The guerrillas put up determined resistance to the Turkish invasion and launched counterattacks. According to the People's Defense Forces (HPG), another 15 soldiers died in the guerrillas’ actions.
Villages are also affected by the Turkish attacks, according to the HPG press center statement published daily. On Tuesday, fighter jets bombed the Medya Defense Areas fifty times, and chemical weapons were used 17 times against guerrillas’ positions in the Zap and Avaşîn regions. In addition, the HPG report continued artillery fire and hundreds of shells fired from howitzers. In addition to Zap and Avaşîn, the Metîna, Gare and Xakurke regions are also affected.
The HPG provided the following information on the situation in the different areas:
“On the Werxelê mountains in Avaşîn, the guerrillas stopped two advance attempts by the Turkish invading troops with heavy weapons and snipers. Two soldiers were killed and another injured. On Kuro Jahro in the Zap region, an enemy position was destroyed with heavy weapons on Monday.
On 31 May and 1 June, three soldiers were shot dead by YJA Star snipers in the Karker resistance area. Three other soldiers were killed in a gun attack on Tuesday. On the same day, the YJA Star attacked an advancing unit with heavy weapons and committed three acts of sabotage against a force comprised of contras speaking Arabic and Kurdish with a Behdînî accent. Four members of this force were killed.
In the Şehîd Şahîn area, four attacks took place on a Turkish unit that wanted to blow up a guerrilla’s post. The intervention forced the unit to retreat.
On Monday and Tuesday, on Girê Cûdî in the Zap region, guerrillas fired on soldiers who wanted to set up a military camp near the Şehîd Savuşka post. Three soldiers were killed. An airborne attempt by the Turkish army was prevented in the vicinity of the Şehîd Leşker guerrilla position.”
