Court orders imprisonment for Kurdish daily distributor killed in Cizre

A Turkish court has ruled a scandalous decision in the trial of Kurdish daily Azadiya Welat worker Ömer Baran and his colleagues Sabri Adanır and Murat Demir within the scope of a law suit opened against them in 2014 for alleged links to an illegal organisation for distributing papers. Ömer Baran was among the dozens massacred in basements of atrocity in Şırnak's Cizre district.

Following the summary judgment of Cizre High Criminal Court on March 9, lawyers demanded the dropping of the case file on Ömer Baran due to his death in Cizre massacre last month, and acquittal of the other two.

The Court Board, however, ruled 5 years and 5 months in prison for all the three on charges of "engaging in organisational activities despite not being a member to an illegal organisation".

Lawyer Nurettin Gasır stressed that they will appeal against the court decision which -he said- is completely against the domestic and international law. He added that distribution of the Kurdish daily was taken as evidence to "membership of an illegal organisation".
