On 17 April 2022, the Turkish army launched a new attempt to occupy the Medya Defense Areas in South Kurdistan with a major invasion. The attacks mainly focus on the Zap area. The guerrillas put up fierce and successful resistance.
Recordings of the battles and radio messages from the guerrillas during an action on 27 May 2022 have now been published.
On 27 May, the guerrillas inflicted heavy casualties to the Turkish army in a coordinated action in the Girê FM resistance area in the Zap region. Around 1 pm the guerrillas attacked the occupying forces, relying primarily on targeted sniper actions. Twelve Turkish soldiers were killed in the action, including a high-ranking military officer.
The successful action was led by YJA Star Commander Nalîn Fırat (Maşallah Kaynak). During her action, Nalîn Fırat overran enemy positions on the front line. She fell in action during combat.
Commander Fırat had joined the guerrillas following the Turkish state's massacre in Cizîra Botan in 2015.
"I tell you in Turkish, so that you understand"
As night fell and fighting continued, the distressed soldiers detonated flares. Meanwhile, the fighters informed the other guerrilla units via radio about the progress of the action.
A YJA Star women guerrilla fighter said over the radio: “You know what we said during the action? We called out to them: This is Kurdistan, you can come in, but you won't get out."
Her words convey the passion and high morale of the fighters. When asked if they had said that to the soldiers in Turkish, she replied: "Of course. I said it in Turkish so that they could understand it."
