Guerrilla commander Zerdeşt Agir was martyred in an attack by the Turkish army in the Gare region of southern Kurdistan after 22 years of revolutionary struggle.
The press centre of the People's Defence Forces (HPG) announced the martyrdom of Zerdeşt Agir in a Turkish attack in the Gare region of southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) on 4 October 2022. The guerrilla commander fought for 22 years in Kurdistan, from Xinêre to Zap, Qandil and Gare to Dersim, and even to the Black Sea region in northern Turkey. Most recently he was in the area command in Gare. HPG extended their condolences to his family, the people of his birthplace Başkale and the entire Kurdish people.
HPG announced the ID details of the fallen guerrilla commander as follows:
Nom de Guerre: Zerdeşt Agir |
According to the HPG statement, Zerdeşt Agir was born in 1984 in the village of Xokan in Van’s Başkale district and belonged to the Ertûşî tribe. His family was close to the Kurdish liberation movement and several of his relatives were in the struggle. One cousin was martyred in Van’s Özalp district in 1999, another in Botan in 2007. Due to the guerrilla struggle in his home region, Zerdeşt Agir already knew the PKK as a child. He dropped out of school after primary school, and he went to the mountains and joined the guerrillas in 2000.
Zerdeşt Agir underwent basic training in Xinêre and became part of the special unit Hêzên Taybet at the end of 2001, which requires an explicit willingness to self-sacrifice and ideological depth. After intensive training, he assumed responsibility for various tasks in the Medya Defence Zones. Between 2006 and 2009, he fought in Dersim.
In 2009, Zerdeşt Agir was part of a group that, under the leadership of the legendary commander Celal Başkale, advanced for the first time into the Black Sea region and formed the vanguard of a battle that shaped the times. In this territory, which was new to the guerrillas, great willpower, patience, practical intelligence and great military skill were required. Zerdeşt Agir stayed there for just under four years. He was in Dersim again between 2012 and 2015.
For an educational course at the Mahsum Korkmaz Military Academy, Zerdeşt Agir returned to the Medya Defence Zones and had the opportunity to self-critically question his previous practice and exchange experiences with his comrades. He then took on various tasks for the Hêzên Taybet.
HPG described Zerdeşt Agir as a modest person whose personality resembled a dervish. He made no distinction between small and large tasks, neither in everyday life nor in guerrilla warfare. In all his activities, from training and strengthening his companions to area command, he showed tireless and thorough dedication. He was constructive and creative and saw himself as "a drop in the ocean of the PKK's meaning and struggle".
