Newroz was celebrated in Hakkari with the slogan "Rabe dema azadî û serkeftinê ye" (Stand up, it's time for freedom and success).
People flocked to the Newroz celebration on the slopes of Mount Sümbül in Hakkari from the early hours of the morning. The area was decorated with the banners of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), and banners reading "Women's struggle against harassment, rape, femicide and child abuse is everywhere" and “With Jin Jiyan Azadî, to March 8". People were allowed into the area after being subjected to body searches at police checkpoints.
The Newroz Organizing Committee read a compilation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan's historic Newroz messages from previous years. The message was frequently interrupted by slogans such as "Bê Serok jiyan nabe" (No life without the leader) and "Bijî Serok Apo" (Long live leader Öcalan) and the message was greeted with applause and cheers.
Speaking at the celebration, DEM Party Hakkari Provincial Co-Chair Kadir Şahin said, "The Kurds are a faithful and honorable people. We will give the biggest answer at the polls with our honorable stance and work."
DEM Party Co-Mayoral Candidates for Hakkari Municipality greeted the people. Co-mayoral candidate Viyan Tekçe said, "We made a promise to the people, and we will fight until the end. Women in particular should embrace this election more against the trustee administration."
The other candidate, Mehmet Sıddık Akış said, "Newroz is the holiday of the oppressed Kurdish people who want freedom. We will carry the enthusiasm of Newroz to March 31st and celebrate it with a great victory. If we form the unity of the Kurdish people, we can end the isolation of Mr. Abdullah Öcalan and conclude the ongoing hunger strikes and the Justice Vigil with freedom through our work and efforts."
TJA activist Zeynep Sipçik started her speech by greeting the female political prisoners and said, "Thousands of greetings to Mr. Abdullah Öcalan. Kurdish women have had an honorable stance since history. Alexander the Great and the cruel Dehak passed through these lands. However, neither the Kurdish women nor the Kurdish people bowed down to these oppressors. These lands gave birth to the likes of Sema and Rahşan. The Kurdish people have been struggling with great honor for centuries. On March 31st, all women should raise their voices at the ballot box. We will break the isolation of Mr. Abdullah Öcalan through our determined struggle."
DEM Party Ağrı MP Sırrı Sakık stated the following: "Our co-mayors served for 8 and a half months and were imprisoned for 8 and a half years. They are bringing in soldiers and police from outside to this city to make them voters. They are trying to steal the will of the people of Hakkari. You don't know the people of Hakkari, who are the light of the Kurdish struggle. When it comes to Kurds, all parties form alliances. In many cities they are trying to win through alliances by not fielding candidates. If they form an alliance against us, we will win by forming unity against them. In this geography you can see severed heads, but you cannot see bowed heads. The demands of prisoners must be accepted. If the demands are accepted, peace can come. If you protect your votes, you can herald peace in this land. This city should create unity. This city should give us great messages.”
After the speeches, the music group Lawje took the stage. The celebration ended with Lawje's songs and the slogan "Newroz pîroz be" (Happy Newroz).
