A political crisis has continued since the referendum on September 25, 2018 in Southern Kurdistan. A proposal signed by 68 MPs from the KDP and the Gorran movement to reactivate the Regional Presidency which had been removed in the referendum was submitted to the parliament.
Kurdistan Regional Parliament’s KDP Group Chair Omed Xosnaw said the proposal was a result of the agreement they reached with the Goran Movement.
The proposal will reactivate the regional presidency act and the president will be elected by the parliament.
Omed Xosnaw said they will get approval from all parties in determining the presidency and the election.
But the New Generation Movement, PUK and Yekgirtu didn’t sign the proposal.
Masoud Barzani resigned on November 1, 2017 after a presidency that went well over the legal term, and the President’s duties were divided between the parliament, the government and the high council for justice.
KDP and Gorran want to reactivate the presidential act suspended in 2017 and elect a new president. The regional president used to be elected through a popular vote, but the new proposal gives the job to the parliament.
Meanwhile, the government still hasn’t been formed, 179 days after the election on September 30, 2018. There are serious disagreements between the PUK, KDP and Gorran. All meetings to date have failed. If the regional president is also elected without the PUK, the crisis may get worse.
