Shengal Women’s Units celebrate Abdullah Öcalan's birthday

The Shengal Women’s Units celebrated Abdullah Öcalan's birthday, saying: "Leader Öcalan's struggle represents a rebirth for women, youth, and our entire people."

The Shengal Women’s Units (YJŞ) issued a written statement to mark Abdullah Öcalan's 76th birthday.

Describing 4 April as the beginning of a new historical era, a day of creation, rebirth, and resistance against oppression, the YJŞ wrote: "Leader Apo’s [Abdullah Öcalan] struggle represents a rebirth for women, youth, and our entire people. His ideas and philosophy have brought hope to the Yazidi community and have been embraced by our heroic martyrs and their families."

The YJŞ continued: "Just as 4 April carries sacred significance for many communities, it holds the same value for the Yazidi people. If today we can preserve our existence despite all attacks and oppression, if we organize, defend our cause, sustain our faith, culture, and historical heritage, it is largely due to Leader Apo’s ideas and philosophy. For this reason, we consider Leader Apo’s birthday as our own rebirth day and celebrate it.

Leader Apo initiated the struggle for humanity and has fought to protect the values of our society, standing by our people through the toughest conditions and against all threats. Even in the harshest circumstances, he has rewritten the history of freedom with great resistance. With his paradigm based on democracy, ecology, and women's liberation, he has led the construction of free societies. Throughout this process, his struggle has become more resilient through the sacrifices of martyrs, reviving our people's hope and faith."

The statement added: "As a people whose national identity was denied, whose language was forbidden, whose culture faced assimilation, and whose historical values were threatened with erasure, we found new life through Leader Apo’s philosophy. A hope for constructing a free and dignified life was born. Therefore, we accept his ideas as guiding principles and continue our struggle for the freedom of our society.

In recent times, Leader Apo’s call for ‘Peace and a Democratic Society’ has resonated greatly in the Middle East and around the world. The perspective he outlined, particularly for Shengal, marks the beginning of a new era for us. Just as the Apoist thought took root among us, the Yazidi people's historical and cultural heritage, once under heavy repression, was revived and breathed again. The Yazidi Renaissance that began at that time has become a fundamental roadmap shaping our future today. With this awareness, we accept the Yazidi Renaissance as our own path and see it as both a responsibility and a duty."

The YJŞ further emphasized that "the struggle for women's freedom and the liberation of peoples has now turned into a universal vanguard movement. For this reason, we, as women, young people, and our people, embrace Leader Apo with great belief and commitment. We will achieve a free life under the light of his ideas. At every stage of our struggle, we will continue on our path, guided by his thoughts.

As we celebrate Leader Apo’s birthday, we also honor everyone fighting for his freedom."
