Turkish fighter jets shelled the villages of Alane, Gunderoj and Azadî in the Balekayeti region of Southern Kurdistan, Northern Iraq on Friday. The aerial bombardment started around 15:00 local time.
250 sheep and goats belonging to a villager named Seyid Hesen were killed by bombs in the Azadî village.
The attack was continuing at around 16.00 local time, so there was no clear information about the extent of the damage.
The Turkish army attacks Southern Kurdistan territory almost daily. In addition to guerrilla areas, civilian settlements in the region are also regularly targeted by the NATO member Turkish state. Since the summer, the air strikes have been concentrated primarily in the Heftanin region in the Medya Defense Zones controlled by the PKK.
Earlier this week, a Turkish delegation led by Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Chief of General Staff Yaşar Güler traveled to Hewlêr (Erbil) to hold talks with the KDP-led government of Southern Kurdistan around further "joint action in the fight against terror." The KDP provides active support for Turkish occupation ambitions in Southern Kurdistan.
