Hashd al-Shaabi militia discovered two mass graves near Qabasi village in Shengal. Remains of at least 80 people were counted in one mass grave. Most of the remains are of women and children.
In another grave mass grave, there are remains of about 60 Ezidis.
Iraqi officials took DNA samples to determine the identity of the dead.
Thousands of Ezidis were killed when ISIS gangs attacked Shengal in 2014. No information is available on the whereabouts of hundreds of people, including many women and children who have fallen into the hands of ISIS.
Shengal mayor Mahma Khalil said that since 2015, around 40 mass graves have been discovered in the region and that “all the victims were Ezidis”.
