On 15 February 2006, YJA Star commander Viyan Soran set her body on fire to protest the isolation imposed on Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the inhumane practices in Imrali.

Today, on the 15th anniversary of her martyrdom, her guerrilla friends spoke to ANF about the her and said: "We will enlarge our struggle with the spirit of the many Viyan and ensure victory".

YJA-Star guerrilla Ekîn Malazgîrt said that they take courage from the spirit of Viyan Soran and added: “It is our martyred friends who give us strength and keep us alive. Comrade Viyan Soran is a source of strength for us, her soul represents the PKK spirit itself. Comrade Viyan was constantly trying to understand Leader Apo [Öcalan] correctly. I remember she read Leader Apo's defense many times over and over again."

Isolation in Imrali has grown heavier day after day

YJA Star guerrilla Roj Argêş said that Viyan Soran's action was also a woman’ action and added: “When we look at her life and struggle, it is possible to understand her personality better. That day she had been thinking about Leader Apo all day”.

Guerrilla Roj Argêş reminded the process leading to the action of Viyan Soran and described that period with the following words: “It was a difficult period for the PKK movement, the isolation imposed upon Leader Apo was getting worse day after day. In such a period, the action of friend Viyan came to us as a light in time of difficulties. She did not carry out this action only to protest the 15 February conspiracy in the person of Leader Apo. For her the physical freedom of Leader Apo was crucial. "

The resistance in Heftanîn was carried out with the spirit of Viyan

Guerrilla Roj Argêş also drew attention to the resistance of the guerrillas in Heftanîn and said: “One of the guerrillas remaining in Heftanîn was Viyan Soran, and she carried out her action there. Today the guerrillas are waging a magnificent struggle in Heftanin. The resistance in Heftanîn keeps the spirit of Viyan alive."

Stating that they, as YJA Star guerrillas, take Viyan Soran's stance as starting point, guerrilla Roj Argêş said: "For us, it is a basis, it is a path we should never leave."

YJA-Star guerrilla Ekîn Malazgîrt added: “The heroes fallen as martyrs in Heftanîn Esmer, Nûcan, Doga and Rusteman took their power from comrade Viyan Soran. We, as HPG and YJA Star guerrillas, aim at achieving victory in 2021 by drawing strength from the spirit of the Viyan."
