140 children taken into custody in 2011

One hundred and forty children were taken into custody in 2011 and 80 children in the first six months of 2012 in the province of Mersin where hardly a day passes without children’s arrests. Separately, 26 Pozantý victim children were detained in the last six months and among them 16 were once again arrested and sent to prison.

Detained children are remanded in custody for many months and not taken to court as the accusation against them isn’t prepared within quite long processes. Furthermore, the children are put in prisons for adults, not those for juveniles.

Including 17 children, 43 people were taken into custody and arrested last year on the grounds of joining the funeral ceremony of People’s Defense Forces (HPG) guerrilla Sadýk Yakut. Although these children have been under arrest for nine months, accused of “opposing the law on meetings and demonstrations” and “making propaganda for an illegal organization”, the accusation against them still remains unprepared. These children have recently been sent to Ankara Sincan Closed Prison for Juveniles after the exposure of sexual abuse and rape against them in Pozantý Prison within this process.

Emine Orhan, mother of a seventeen year old detained child, said after her visit to her son that her child was subject to arbitrary treatment and pressure. Mother Orhan demanded the release of her child in the soonest time, remarking that he has been held in prison unjustly for nine months.

Human Rights Association (IHD) Mersin Branch Chair Ali Tanrýverdi, underlining that detained children are subject to continuous unjust treatment, stated that these children should immediately be released following a process of trial without arrest.

90 out of 140 detained children in Mersin were sent to prison in the year of 2011, while this number continued to increase in 2012 when 80 children were taken into custody and among them 60 were arrested in the first six months.  16 out of 26 Pozantý children who were once again detained soon after their release have recently been arrested and sent to Mersin E Type Closed Prison for adults which doesn’t have proper conditions for children.
