According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left 18 women/teenager girls killed, 10 raped, 24 injured, and 9 sexually harassed in November 2014.
Overall in 2014, male perpetrators left 253 women killed, 98 raped, 523 battered and 104 sexually harassed.
Murder
In November, men killed 18 women and 2 men across Turkey.
28 percent of women were slain for seeking a divorce/break up.
61 percent of women were by their husbands or lovers. 16 percent were slain by their ex-husbands or ex-lovers.
Murder perpetrator men were identified as husband (7), religiously-wed husband (1), lover (3), ex-lover (2), ex-husband (1), father (1), brother (1), male relative (1) and neighbor (1).
While 61 percent of murders were perpetrated with fire guns. Murders were committed by the following methods: knife (6), rifle (5), pushing from stairs (1).
Following the murders, 3 men committed suicide, 3 attempted to do so, 2 surrendered to the law enforcement officials.
The murderers were aged between 15 to 60 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 15 to 57.
Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Ağrı, Antalya, Bolu, Bursa, Çorum, Edirne, Hatay, İzmir, İzmit (2), Karaman, Kastamonu, Kayseri (2), Konya, Mersin, Trabzon and Uşak.
Women murders with unidentified perpetrators/ Suspected deaths
In Ankara, a female university student was found dead in a hotel room. In Antep, it was claimed that a Syrian refugee woman and his lover were found dead after being tortured. Police is seeking the woman’s husband as top suspect.
Rape
In November, 10 rape cases appeared on the media. Most cases were reported from Antalya and Aydın.
Half of the perpetrators were acquaintances of women and half as strangers.
Rape perpetrator men were identified as lover (1), ex-lover (1), friend (2), father (1), stranger (5).
Rapes were committed in the following venues: abduction venues (5), apartment (4), on the street (1).
The rapists were aged between 19 to 54 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 15 to 32.
Rape cases were reported in the following cities: Aksaray, Antalya, (3), Aydın (2), İstanbul, Sakarya, Uşak and Zonguldak.
Battery/Assault
In November, men battered 24 women across Turkey.
12.5 percent of women were battered for either seeking divorce or turning down a compromise offer.
One woman was battered despite a court restraint order.
33 percent of women were subjected to male violence by their husbands or lovers. Violence perpetrators included: lover (2), husband (6), ex-husband (3), son (3), ex-lover (1), mother’s lover (1), sister’s lover (1), son-in-law (1), cousin (1), policemen (1), men with turned down offer (1), bus driver (1), friend (1) and stranger (1).
While 62.5 percent of women (15) were battered. Three were wounded by pistol and three by knives. Two were tortured by their ex-husbands. One was abducted and thrown away from the car after police chase.
The male aggressors were aged between 16 to 66 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 15 to 57.
Battery/Assault cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Aksaray, Ankara (3), Aydın, Çorum (2), Erzincan, İstanbul, Kayseri (2), Kocaeli, Kütahya, Manisa, Muğla, Samsın (3) and Trabzon (3).
Harassment
In November, 9 sexual harassment cases appeared on the media across Turkey.
Harassment venues/platforms included on street (7 cases, 77 percent), school (1), public transport (1).
77 percent of the women (7) were harassed by men they didn’t know. Other perpetrators included ex-husband (1), teacher (1).
The male harassers were aged between 18 to 39 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 10 to 33.
Sexual harassment incidents were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Antalya, Eskişehir, Kocaeli, Manisa, Muğla and Osmaniye.
Retaliation to male violence
In Samsun, one woman assaulted her husband with a knife saying that she was systematically being battered. Hospitalized, the man died a few days later.
Regional distribution
In November 2014, 61 cases of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and battery were reported across 30 provinces across Turkey.
61 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (9), Aegean (11), Mediterranean (14), Black Sea (13), Eastern-Anatolia (2) and Central Anatolia (12).
